  • Evans School HuskyFest Budget Ball Team Displays Hardy Spirit

Bad weather, plastic hats, and sneaky tactics stymied a team of mostly rookie Evans School players at the 2011 HuskyFest Budgetball match with students from the Law School. The Evans School started out strong with three points in the first five minutes and finished the first quarter with an 8 to 6 lead.

Flashes of brilliance by Megan "Crusher" McPhaden (MPA ’12), the Evans School's lone female player, helped the team rally briefly in the final moments of the game, but it was not enough to stop the agile-almost-advocates.

The Law School won 102 to 25.

The Evans School held “How Philanthropy Can Build Enterprising Nonprofits,” second in a series of faculty roundtables celebrating the school's 50th anniversary, on March 14. The well-attended roundtable opened with a presentation by Carla Javits, president of the Roberts Enterprise Development Fund (REDF), a San Francisco-based venture philanthropy organization that creates jobs and employment opportunities for people facing the greatest barriers to work. Javits detailed some of the ways that the major sectors of society (government, nonprofit, philanthropy, business) are changing, with divides among these institutions blurring.

Moderator David Harrison, senior lecturer, expertly led the panel through a discussion of Javits' talk. Assistant Professor Justin Marlowe responded by highlighting the opportunity to make capital markets more effective; Associate Professor Mary Kay Gugerty outlined the need for tools to encourage transparency among the nonprofit sector; and Associate Professor Sanjeev Khagram pushed for focus on “scaled impact.”
