Randy Engstrom Receives National Award for Arts Leadership

Executive Master of Public Administration (Executive MPA) student Randy Engstrom received the Americans for the Arts 2009 Emerging Leader Award for his work as the founding director of the Youngstown Cultural Arts Center in West Seattle. The award, given by the national leading nonprofit for advancing the arts, recognizes young leaders for their exceptional work in arts administration. Alumnus Cory Sbarbaro Wins Teaching Award

Cory Sbarbaro (MPA '02) received the Teaching Excellence Award in the Nonprofit and Public Sector category from University of Washington Extension. Sbarbaro also teaches occasional courses for the Evans School MPA program and Cascade Executive Programs and serves as an advisor to the Nancy Bell Evans Center on Nonprofits & Philanthropy at the Evans School.
Congratulations Class of 2009!

More than 150 students became the Evans School’s newest alumni at our Convocation ceremony on June 12. Held in Kane Hall, the event featured a convocation address from Ron Sims, deputy secretary of the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, and former King County Executive.

Norman B. Rice Named President/CEO of The Seattle Foundation

Norman B. Rice (MPA '74), a Distinguished Visiting Practioner at the Evans School, was named President and CEO of The Seattle Foundation, one of the largest community foundations in the United States. Ron Sims, Deputy Secretary of U.S. HUD, to Keynote Evans School Convocation

Ron Sims, Deputy Secretary of the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), will deliver the keynote address at the Evans School's Convocation Ceremony on June 12 at 9 a.m. Sims previously served as King County Executive. Learn more about Convocation
Catherine Kilbane Article Accepted for Publication

An article co-authored by MPA student Catherine Kilbane titled "Integrating Conservation and Development in the Peruvian Amazon" was accepted for publication in the journal Ecology and Society. The article was produced as part of Kilbane's studies in Peru through the Fulbright Program and is co-authored by Leslie Gray of Santa Clara University.
Hubert G. Locke Presenting at Christian Scholars’ Conference

Hubert G. Locke will be one of four keynote speakers at the Christian Scholars' Conference at Lipscomb University on June 25. He will speak on "The Power of Narrative" in relation to his studies of the role of churches during the Holocaust.

Anne Buffardi Receives Global Health Research Fellowship

Ph.D. student Anne Buffardi is the recipient of a Thomas Francis Jr. Global Health Fellowship and will undertake a research project studying the implementation of foreign aid programs in Peru during the winter quarter of next year.
Tyler Blake Davis Presents Report to the Congressional Research Service

Ph.D. student Tyler Blake Davis presented a report last month to the Congressional Research Service in Washington, D.C., on using benefit-cost analysis to reform principles and standards of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in constructing levees for flood control on the upper Mississippi River. The report was co-presented with his colleague Julie Vano, a Ph.D. student in the UW Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and was produced under the faculty supervision of Richard O. Zerbe Jr. and Joseph H. Cook.
