Alumni Job Search Workshop

Are you an Evans School alum seeking to start or re-energize your job search? Have you been considering transitioning to a new career, new sector, or possibly relocating? Would you benefit from an individual resume review and advice from four different experienced career counselors?

This special, once-per-year session will provide an engaging, interactive day with the following agenda:

LIFE AND CAREER SELF-TEST: with special Guest Speaker, Carol Vecchio, founder and executive director of Centerpoint Institute for Life and Career Renewal. Vecchio has served as a full-time career counselor since 1981.

RESUMES AND COVER LETTERS: with Heather Krasna, director of career services at the Evans School. This session includes strategies to change a good resume into an outstanding resume, create tailored and compelling cover letters, and receive individually revised resumes.

NETWORKING AND INFORMATIONAL INTERVIEWING: with Don Gallagher, associate director of career services for the UW Alumni Association, and a panel of Evans School alumni. This session covers how to: leverage your network; find contacts through social networks such as Husky Career Network, Linkedin.com, and professional organizations; and how to set up informational interviews and maintain contacts.

LUNCH AND NETWORKING

RESEARCHING EMPLOYERS AND JOB SEARCH STRATEGY: with Heather Krasna. This sessions covers Internet job search sites, employer research, organizing the job search, and identifying opportunities.

INTERVIEWING: with Briana Keller, career counselor at the UW Center for Career Services. This session includes interview practice, strategy, role plays, and preparation tips.

JOB OFFER EVALUATION, SALARY, AND PROMOTION NEGOTIATION: with Heather Krasna. This session covers how to: handle and evaluate job offers; decide between two offers; what to negotiate; and how to ask for benefits, promotion or salary, and decline offers without burning bridges.

Cost: $85 (includes continental breakfast, lunch, snack, individual resume review, and approximately 80 pages of handouts, exercises, and tools to organize your search)

How to Register:

  2. Write a check made out to the University of Washington for $85 and send it to Career Services, 109 Parrington Hall, Box 353055, Seattle, WA 98195.

What to Bring
A paper copy of your resume/cover letter(s) and copies of positions you are interested in. An additional pre-workshop exercise will be emailed to you once your registration is received.

How to Prepare
Update your resume and start a list of those in your network who might be able to help you with your job search. If you don’t have an EvansJobs account, please register for one.

About of the Facilitators:

Heather Krasna is the director of career services for the Evans School and has more than ten years of experience as a career coach. She holds a Master of Science in Nonprofit Management from the New School, and certificates in Adult Career Planning and Development and Organizational Development. She is provisionally certified as a Dale Carnegie trainer and has published several articles related to job searches.

Carol Vecchio is founder and executive director of Centerpoint Institute for Life and Career Renewal. She is a sought-out speaker and facilitator who has inspired audiences of all sizes throughout the United States and Canada. As a full-time career counselor since 1981, Vecchio has worked with people in a variety of fields and professions. She is currently writing a book with the working title The Time Between Dreams: Successfully Navigating Change and Uncertainty in Life and Work. She balances her work with time spent with her husband, singing, cats, jewelry making, walking half marathons, home improvement projects, and “urban homesteading.”

Don Gallagher is associate director of career Services for the UW Alumni Association.

Briana Keller is the career counselor for the UW Center for Career Services. In addition to career counseling, Briana has experience in mental health counseling, college teaching, and nonprofit leadership.
