March 1, 2010
12:30 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Parrington Hall - Forum (309)
Maria Cancian, Professor of Public Affairs and Social Work; Faculty Affiliate, Institute for Research on Poverty; Faculty Affiliate, Center for Demography and Ecology; Univ of Wisconsin-Madison will be the guest speaker. She will speak on the subject of "Child Support: Responsible Fatherhood and the Quid Pro Quo."
Should we expect disadvantaged nonresident fathers to pay child support even if they are poor? How should the child support enforcement system be reformed given major changes in the safety net, in the relative earnings of men and women, and patterns of marriage and fertility?
Maria Cancian is Professor of Public Affairs and Social Work and an affiliate of the Institute for Research on Poverty at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her research considers the relationship between public policies and changes in marriage, fertility and employment, with a focus on the implications of child support policy for the well-being of divorced and never-married families, the employment and income of women who have received welfare, and the impact of married women's growing employment and earnings on marriage patterns and the inter-and intra-household distribution of income. She has served as Director of the Institute for Research on Poverty and Vice President of the Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management. Professor Cancian received her doctorate in Economics from the University of Michigan. Refreshments will be provided.
